Can You Export a Private Instagram Account's Followers?

Short answer: only if you already follow it.

The longer answer is worth understanding, because it explains why every tool behaves the same way here and why the ones that promise otherwise are the ones to avoid.

The rule

Instagram decides who can see a private account's follower and following lists. The rule it applies is the same one that governs the rest of a private profile:

• You follow the account → you're an approved follower, so you can open its follower list, scroll it, and therefore export it.
• You don't follow it → Instagram shows you the bio, the follower count, and a "This account is private" wall. The list itself is not sent to your device at all.

A follower-export tool works through your logged-in session. It asks Instagram for the same data the app would show you. So it can see exactly what you can see — no more. If Instagram won't show you the list, it won't show the tool either.

The one exception: your own account

Your own followers and following are always available to you, private account or not. Two ways:

• Instagram's Download Your Information — Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → Followers and following → JSON. Works regardless of your privacy setting.
• An extension in your session — you're viewing your own profile while signed in, so the lists are right there.

If you keep your account private specifically so people can't see your audience, note that you can still export it freely.

Why no tool bypasses this

This isn't a limitation tools haven't gotten around yet. It's the permission model doing its job.

The data behind a private account's follower list never reaches an unauthorised device. There's no rendered version to scrape, no endpoint that returns it without the right session, nothing cached client-side. A tool can't extract what was never delivered.

This is also, incidentally, the reason a browser extension is the right form factor for follower export at all: the data sits behind your own authenticated session, so no cloud service and no AI agent can get it for you — it has to run where you're already signed in. What "export any private account" actually means

If a tool advertises exporting private accounts you don't follow, there are only two possibilities:

1. It doesn't work. The feature is marketing; the export returns empty or errors.
2. It's asking for your Instagram password, or routing you through a login that isn't Instagram's. Hand your credentials to a third party and they can read your DMs, post as you, and lock you out. No follower list is worth that.

A legitimate tool never needs your password. It either uses Instagram's own export, or it runs in the tab you're already signed into.

The practical version

If you need a private account's list and you don't follow it, the only real option is to send a follow request and wait for it to be approved.
