The Side Quest: Privacy Policy
The Side Quest is a Chrome extension that replaces your new tab page. It works without an account. This page says plainly what it stores, what leaves your computer, and what we never collect.
What stays in your browser
- Your settings, wallpaper choices, favorites, uploaded images, tasks, bookmarks, app shortcuts and layout. These live in Chrome's extension storage on your device.
- Your companion: its name, level, XP, streak and daily quests.
- If you are signed in to Chrome with sync on, your companion's progress is also backed up through Chrome's own sync storage, so it follows you to your other computers. Google handles that storage under your Google account; we never see it.
What is sent, and only when you use that feature
- Multiplayer games (Chess, Bingo, Clash). When you create or join a room, the extension connects to a realtime service (Supabase) and shares a room code, a random session id, your companion's chosen name and your in-game moves or button presses with the other players in that room. No account is involved and nothing here is used for advertising or sold. Chess stores the board position and result for the room so both players can continue.
- Weather (optional). It is off by default. If you type a city in Settings, the city name and its coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo to look up the temperature. We do not ask Chrome for your location.
- Wallpapers and fonts. Images load from their hosts (for example Unsplash). The page loads its fonts from Google Fonts and shortcut icons from Google's favicon service, which means those providers can see the domains of your shortcuts and your IP address, as with any website.
- Importing wallpapers. If you choose to import images from Pinterest, a small script runs on Pinterest pages only to read the images you ask for. It does not read anything else.
Bug reports
Settings > Help opens an email that you write and send yourself. It includes the extension version, your browser name and screen size so a problem can be reproduced. Nothing is sent automatically.
What we do not do
- No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels.
- We do not sell or share your data and we do not use it for anything unrelated to making the extension work.
- The extension contains all its own code. It does not download or run remote code.
Your choices
Remove the extension and Chrome deletes its local storage. Your sync backup can be cleared by resetting Chrome sync data in your Google account. Clear the weather city in Settings at any time to turn weather off.
